To build…you have to fight

What are you building?

What are you fighting for?

These are the two questions I posed to my students last week. For the last few weeks we have been going over the book of Nehemiah and extracting what it takes to be a leader.

Nehemiah 4:17-18a says “And the leaders stood behind the whole house of Judah, who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built.”

In life we are constantly building things…our family, our marriage, our walk with God, our jobs.

We like building, we can see progress with building, but building is insufficient if you don’t fight to keep it. Fighting is hard work and at times it is harder than building itself. Fighting is dirty, its messy and often times results in some bloodshed, but if you don’t fight for what you have built or what you are building it can be gone in an instant. Our lives should be in constant building and fighting mode, cause our work is never done.

Fight for what you have…

So what are you building?
